Lucky win brings mum closer to dream job

Winning a Challenger TAFE online competition has brought sole parent Alice Potgieter closer to her dream of starting an events management business.

Alice took out the main prize in a competition Challenger TAFE ran in conjunction with Nova 93.7FM, which offered Nova’s website visitors the chance to win money towards course fees.

With a flair for organising parties and some events management study already under her belt, Alice wanted to gain further skills that would enable her to start her own business. Working for herself would give her the freedom to spend more time with her five year-old daughter.

It was while enrolling in a Diploma of Events at Challenger TAFE’s Beaconsfield campus last week that Alice received a phone call from Nova telling her she had won the competition and the prize money was hers.

“I couldn’t believe it!” Alice said. “Not only will this money cover the course fees, it will help with text books, my uniform and a new laptop.

“Coordinating events is what I have always wanted to do; I have earned a reputation among my family and friends for organising great parties.

“This competition is the perfect thing for me to win at this time of my life. And the diploma will give me the practical skills and contacts in the industry to make owning an events business a reality.”

Alice received more good news on the same day when Challenger TAFE hospitality and tourism lecturer Kathryn Clark said she would be eligible for recognition of prior learning because of her previous studies.

“Alice was so excited about her career path and once she realised she was exempt from some study, it became a more feasible path for her to follow,” Kathryn said.
